Sir Herbert Maxwell mentions in his book SALMON AND SEA-TROUT [1880] a Dr Begg on the Tyne River who caught over 150 salmon on a skittered or dibbled fly in 1867. He fished with 2 flies, one tied on a dropper. The fies were cast square across the current, than allowed to swing shoreward, making a commotion on the surface. Hewitt describes a similar technique using a hookless end fly and a dry fly on a short dropper.George Bonbright did extensive experimenting with dry flies on the Grand Cascapedia in the early 1920's. He preferred the soft-hackle dry which floated in the surface film rather than on top of it. High-floating flies were often missed by the fish because they were pushed to the side, whereas the low-floating flies hooked better. So our technique of waking a low-floating Muddler Minnow or similar fly for steelhead dates back to the1860's! The flies shown are both fished and unfished.
